Skupina vznikla v roce 1989 v Londýně a za dobu své existence natočili Tiger Lillies více než dvě desítky alb. Vedle koncertování po celém světě spolupracovali na řadě hudebních a divadelních projektů – například představení Circa s kanadským tanečním souborem Holy Body Tattoo. Za kultovní muzikál Shockheaded Peter získali prestižní divadelní ocenění Olivier Award. Album The Gorey end, které natočili společně s Kronos Quartetem získalo nominaci na Grammy. Během své hudební kariéry spolupracovali s řadou dalších tvůrců, mezi kterými jsou Alexander Hacke & Danielle de Picciotto, Nan Goldin, St. Vincent a další.

„Brechtovský punkový kabaret“ The Tiger Lillies si získal české publikum již v 90. letech, kdy trojice hrála v žižkovských hospodách. Skladbám, které nesou stopy pouliční opery, předválečného kabaretu, francouzského šansonu, cikánských písní a odkazů na Jacquese Brela a Bertholda Brechta, dominuje hlas Martyna Jacquese, který se jako samouk vyškolil na zpěváka s kastrátskou technikou hlasu. Pro Divadlo Archa, kde pravidelně vystupují, vytvořili The Tiger Lillies s režisérem Jiřím Havelkou v roce 2010 hudební moralitu Zde jsem člověkem! Here I am Human!

The world of The Tiger Lillies is dark, peculiar and varied, with moments of deep sadness, cruel black humour and immense beauty. This unique "anarchic Brechtian street opera trio" tours the world playing songs about “anything that doesn’t involve beautiful blonde girls and boys running at the meadow” to quote their founder Martyn Jacques. Hence, their songs cover all the dark aspects of life, from prostitution and drug addiction to violence and despair. Always with a touch of twisted humor and sharp irony The Tiger Lillies “point an implicit accusing finger back at us: what on Earth are we doing, laughing at this stuff?”. Their music is a mixture of pre-war Berlin cabaret, anarchic opera and gypsy music, echoing the voices of Bertolt Brecht and Jacques Brel. The Tiger Lillies shock, amuse and entertain in a postmodern vaudeville way, with their inimitable in-yer-face shows, where no limit should be taken for granted.
